A soup kitchen is a good answer for people who cannot afford a proper, nourishing meal, and indeed ours feeds more than a hundred people every day. Sadly, many of those who need food, people in difficult financial circumstances, are also older people, many of them not mobile or in poor health. They cannot get to the soup kitchen, or they go without a nourishing meal that day. We thought about those who find it hard, or impossible, to come to us, and we offer a service that brings meals to anyone who needs them.
Just as at the soup kitchen, the meals that arrive at home are nourishing and generous, and they are packed in sealed trays, so that the appearance, convenience and hygiene that matter so much, especially to people whose health is not at its best, are all preserved.
Portions for every day, and of course for Shabbat
Our van goes out on its rounds three times a week, on Sundays, Tuesdays and Thursdays, but we make sure the people who receive meals have one for every day. The amount each person or family receives from us is a double portion, and on Thursdays a larger one still, so that there is a meal for Shabbat too. The people who prepare and distribute the meals are the students of our yeshiva. Here, too, the work is done gladly and with plenty of smiles, so that the families, and especially the older people living alone who receive the meals, look forward to the volunteers, who make a point of adding to the portions a smile, a kind word, a few minutes' conversation, and a listening ear.
That is how we know that the person has been recharged for the day, in body and in spirit.
Improving and growing, with you, our donors
We are here for the people on the lowest incomes, for those who physically belong to the community but tend to hide away and disappear, and don't always know how to ask. We give to them, and we ask on their behalf. We know from experience that people who have, love to give, to donate, and to know that their donation reaches the right places and the hands that truly need it. So if you would like to feel that satisfaction and know that your donation (of whatever size, large or small) is received with great appreciation and directed to the right place, we would be glad if you got in touch and gave as you are able. Besides, no one knows what tomorrow brings. The wheel can turn.
